The Covered Souk of Aleppo (Souq al-Madina) — the World's Largest Historic Covered Market
A guide to Aleppo's covered souk, Souq al-Madina — a stone-vaulted labyrinth some 13 km long with over 40 specialised markets, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1986, damaged by fire in 2012 and reopening market by market. History, what to buy and what's nearby — and we'll get you there.
Beneath stone vaults that run for kilometres breathes the covered souk of Aleppo — Souq al-Madina. The world's largest historic covered market, a labyrinth of specialised bazaars that traded for centuries on the Silk Road. It came through a 2012 fire and is reopening market by market. Here's its story, what you'll find, and what's nearby.
Souq al-Madina by the numbers
- About 13 kilometres of covered lanes — reckoned the largest covered historic market in the world.
- More than 40 specialised souks: the coppersmiths', the soap-makers', the spice sellers', the tailors' — each trade in its own lane.
- World Heritage: the Ancient City of Aleppo, with its citadel and commercial core, was inscribed by UNESCO in 1986.
The fire and the restoration
- In September 2012 a major fire swept the souk during the fighting, damaging around 1,500 of its 1,600 shops by UNESCO's assessment — though the stone structure largely held.
- From 2017 a "Revive Aleppo Souqs" initiative trained craftsmen in traditional techniques.
- Souq al-Nahhasin (the coppersmiths') reopened in 2021, with work ongoing elsewhere. The February 2023 earthquake caused fresh damage.
What you'll find
Aleppo laurel soap, spices and Aleppo pepper, fabrics, gold and copperware. The souk is a place to wander before it's a place to buy — soft light falling through the vault onto old stone, scents and sounds that carry you back centuries.
What's nearby
- The Great Mosque of Aleppo and the Citadel are a stone's throw away.
- Khans open off the souk itself.
- Al-Jdeideh and its restaurants are close by.
