Apamea — Syria's Great Colonnade
Apamea near Hama, one of Syria's great ancient cities, with a Roman colonnaded street nearly 2 km long and its distinctive spiral-fluted columns — and how to visit.

Apamea is one of Syria's great ancient cities — a Hellenistic-Roman city on the Orontes whose most famous feature is a colonnaded street nearly 2 km long, among the longest in the ancient world. Its spiral-fluted columns set it apart from any other site.
What to see
- The Great Colonnade — a paved Roman avenue lined with hundreds of columns, some with Corinthian capitals, some with rare spiral fluting.
- The citadel (Qalaat al-Mudiq) and an Ottoman khan that now holds a mosaic museum.
An honest note
Apamea is magnificent, but it suffered heavy illegal digging during the war years. Even so, the colonnade still stands and still takes your breath away.
