Not a military castle but the greatest Byzantine pilgrimage church in Syria, built in the 5th century around the pillar on which a saint lived for decades. The story of Saint Simeon

Simeon the Stylite was a 5th-century ascetic who famously spent around 37 years atop a pillar in prayer, drawing pilgrims from across the Christian world. After his death a vast church complex rose around his pillar, becoming one of the great pilgrimage centres of the ancient world.

The architecture

• Four basilicas arranged in the shape of a cross around a central octagonal court.
• At the centre, the remains of Saint Simeon's pillar — pilgrims once chipped fragments from it for blessing.
• It was most likely built under Emperor Zeno (474–491), and was among the largest churches in the world in its day.

Honestly — today

Qalaat Samaan was damaged by air strikes in 2016 (the pillar's remains and the complex were affected). But the site is still majestic and well worth visiting, and its views are among the finest in the north. We confirm access and conditions before the trip.

Pair it with the Dead Cities

Saint Simeon is part of the world of the Dead Cities — hundreds of abandoned Byzantine stone villages between Aleppo and Idlib, a World Heritage landscape. Nearby stands the well-preserved 5th-century basilica of Mushabbak on the same road, so one day can take in several sites.

• Spring and autumn are mildest, and mornings best for photos.
