Mount Qasioun — Damascus From Above (Sunset Viewpoint Guide)
A guide to Mount Qasioun, the mountain overlooking Damascus — the view over the Old City and the Ghouta, when to go (sunset), the ridge cafés, and how to get up with a driver.

Qasioun is the mountain that cradles Damascus from the north, and the easiest way to grasp the shape of the city: you stand at the top and see it all spread out below. Here's when to go, what you'll see, and how to get up.
The view
From the ridge you look over:
- The Old City at the centre, the Umayyad Mosque's minarets rising from it.
- The modern districts stretching west and south.
- The Ghouta — the green belt that rings the city.
- On clear days, Mount Hermon far to the southwest.
When to go
About half an hour before sunset — you see the city in daylight, then watch its lights come on. The transition is the whole point: the evening turns the view into a sea of lights, the most famous sight of Damascus. Mornings are clearer for photos but less magical.
The cafés
Cafés and restaurants line the lookout with terraces over the city — sit, order something and take it in. Friday and Saturday evenings get busy.
How to get there
By car only — the road climbs and winds, with no easy public transport to the top. It's about 20 minutes from central Damascus depending on where you start and the traffic.
Combine it with
Qasioun works best as the last stop of your day: walk the Old City by day, then drive up before sunset.
A tip
Bring a jacket — Qasioun is cooler than the city, especially in the evening and in winter; the difference can be five degrees.
