A Maaloula and Saidnaya day trip from Damascus — some of the world's oldest monasteries, the village where Aramaic (the language of Christ) is still spoken, Our Lady of Saidnaya and its icon, St. Sarkis and St. Thecla and the gorge. History, stops, timing and tips — arranged with a driver and airport pickup.

Maaloula and Saidnaya monasteries day trip — Darb El Sham

An hour north of Damascus, the Qalamoun mountains hold some of the oldest Christian sites on earth — and a village where people still speak Aramaic, the language of Christ. A Maaloula and Saidnaya day trip pairs sacred history with dramatic cliffside scenery. This guide gives you the full story, the stops, the timing and the tips, and we arrange it with a comfortable vehicle and a driver who knows the roads.

How far & how long

  • Saidnaya is about 27 km north of Damascus; Maaloula about 56 km to the northeast — on the northern road through the Damascus countryside.
  • A full day covers both comfortably, with time to walk the gorge and visit the monasteries. A half day covers one.

Saidnaya — the monastery on the rock

Our Lady of Saidnaya is one of the oldest and most revered monasteries in the world, a pilgrimage site for centuries:

  • History: tradition credits the Byzantine emperor Justinian with founding it in 547 AD, after a vision of the Virgin Mary that showed him where and how to build. It sits on a rocky outcrop at about 1,500 m.
  • The Shaghurah icon: its most famous treasure — an icon of the Virgin and Child attributed to Saint Luke, believed to protect its owners in times of danger. It drew pilgrims from across the medieval world.
  • Pilgrimage: the Nativity of the Virgin Mary on 8 September is the great occasion, and both Christian and Muslim pilgrims come — for blessing and for healing.

Maaloula — Aramaic, monasteries & the gorge

Maaloula is a village built into the cliffs, one of only three places on earth where Western Neo-Aramaic is still spoken (with Jubb'adin and Bakha):

  • St. Sarkis (Mar Sarkis) Monastery — the higher one, dating to the 4th–6th century on the ruins of a pagan temple, with icons from the 16th–18th centuries. Here the Lord's Prayer is still recited in Aramaic.
  • The Convent of St. Thecla (Mar Taqla) — in the valley, with her tomb and a rock-cut church. By legend, the mountain split open to let Thecla escape her pursuers — and that cleft is the gorge.
  • The Al-Fajj gorge — a narrow, dramatic passage through the rock between the convent and the village.
  • The village — blue-washed stone houses clinging to the cliff, caves, and a large statue of the Virgin on the heights. The Festival of the Holy Cross is marked with fires on the mountaintops.

The Aramaic connection

Maaloula is one of the very few places on earth where Western Neo-Aramaic — the everyday language in the time of Christ — survives as a living tongue. Hearing the Lord's Prayer in Aramaic at St. Sarkis is an unforgettable moment, and it's what makes this trip unlike anywhere else.

When to go & tips

  • Spring and autumn are the most pleasant; mornings are quieter and cooler. Around 8 September Saidnaya fills with pilgrims.
  • Dress modestly for the monasteries, and wear comfortable shoes for the gorge and steps.
  • Carry cash — see money in Syria.
  • Maaloula was damaged during the war years and is re-emerging as a destination — we confirm access in advance. Combine it with a Damascus day on either side.
