Beit Achiqbash, Aleppo — an 18th-Century Palace & the Museum of Popular Traditions
The story of Beit Achiqbash in Aleppo — an Aleppine palace from 1757 in the Al-Jdeideh quarter, famous for its courtyard, fountain, carved stone and stained glass, now the Museum of Popular Traditions. History, architecture and what's nearby.
In Aleppo's Al-Jdeideh quarter stands a palace whose courtyard is among the loveliest in the city: Beit Achiqbash. An 18th-century mansion, its carved stone and stained glass distil the craft of the Aleppine house, and today it holds the Museum of Popular Traditions. Here's its story, its architecture and what's nearby.
The house's story
- Beit Achiqbash dates to 1757 (1170 AH), in Al-Jdeideh.
- By local accounts it was built for a wealthy merchant family and later passed to the Achiqbash (Ajiqbash) owner whose name it carries — the name itself a piece of local folklore.
- Today it houses the Museum of Popular Traditions, portraying the daily life and customs of old Aleppo.
Architecture
Beit Achiqbash is among the most richly decorated of Aleppo's houses: a courtyard with a central fountain, ringed by halls and an iwan; a large iwan open to the court for summer; fine carved stone and stained glass (qamariyat) on the inner façade; an authentic Ottoman design with touches of Western influence — the blend that marks Al-Jdeideh's houses.
Honestly — check first
Beit Achiqbash was badly damaged during the war. Restoration and opening hours change — we confirm whether the museum is open before we arrange your visit, and suggest other houses in the quarter if needed.
