In the heart of Aleppo's Al-Jdeideh quarter stands a palace counted among the largest and best-preserved Ottoman-era houses in the city: Beit Ghazaleh. A 17th-century mansion owned by the Ghazaleh family for two centuries, it became a school and then the Memory Museum of Aleppo. Here's its story, its architecture and what's nearby.
The house's story
- Beit Ghazaleh dates to the 17th century, in Al-Jdeideh — one of the largest, best-preserved Ottoman palaces in Aleppo.
- It is named after the Ghazaleh family, who owned it for about two centuries.
- From 1914 it served as a public school.
- It was restored between 2007 and 2011 and turned into the Memory Museum of the city of Aleppo.
Architecture and carving
Beit Ghazaleh is a masterpiece of the Aleppine house: carved stone lintels with fine floral designs over the courtyard windows; painted inscriptions blending popular sayings, mystic poetry and psalms; and its own private hammam — said to be the only one of its kind among Aleppo's houses. Within are the classic courtyard, iwan and reception halls.
Honestly — today
Beit Ghazaleh was looted and damaged during the war, and further affected by the February 2023 earthquake. The Memory Museum project continues and restoration is ongoing — we confirm whether it's open before we arrange a visit, and find an alternative in the quarter if needed.
