Marqab (Margat) — the Black Crusader Castle Over the Syrian Coast
A guide to Marqab castle near Baniyas on the Syrian coast — a vast black-basalt Crusader fortress of the Knights Hospitaller on an extinct volcano above the Mediterranean. What to see, and how to visit between Latakia and Tartus.

Marqab (Margat) is a vast fortress of black basalt on an extinct volcanic hill over the Mediterranean, near Baniyas on the Syrian coast. Its dark stone and sheer size make it one of the most imposing castles in Syria — and far less known than Krak des Chevaliers, though almost its equal. Here's what to see and how to visit.
Getting there
On the coast near Baniyas, between Latakia and Tartus:
- From Latakia — about 55 km south.
- From Tartus — about 55 km north.
So it makes a comfortable stop as you travel along the coast. See the Syrian coast guide.
What makes it special
- Black basalt — the whole castle is built of dark volcanic stone, an unusual sight for a Crusader fortress.
- Its scale — one of the largest Crusader castles, held by the Knights Hospitaller (the same order as Krak des Chevaliers), with room for a large garrison and years of supplies.
- The view — from its ramparts you see the sea, the coastal plain and the mountains — a strategic site watching the whole coast road.
- The chapel and keep — still standing, with Crusader architectural detail.
How long & an honest note
About 1.5 to 2 hours at the castle — there's climbing and open space, so wear comfortable shoes and bring water and sun protection. Marqab is less restored and less crowded than Krak des Chevaliers, and that's part of its magic: you often have it almost to yourself.
